In August of 2001, Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro Inc., a U.S. game manufacturer, indulged J.K. Rowling's biggest fans when they released their first set of Harry Potter trading cards. The Harry Potter trading cards made its debut in London at Great Hall, Guildhall, to hundreds of children fully clad as their favorite Harry Potter characters.

The first set of Harry Potter trading cards, currently referred to as the base set, contains116 cards. This base set was based on the initial novel in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." The Harry Potter trading cards provide fans the opportunity to further immerse themselves into the word of Harry Potter.

The base set of the Harry Potter Trading Cards includes a play mat, creature cards, lesson cards, spell cards, adventure cards, and item cards. The play mat acts as a map providing directions to guide players through their match. The way to win the match is to be the first player to diminish the opposing players' deck of Harry Potter trading cards. To do this, players will need the lesson cards, which will give them the skills needed to damage the opposing players' deck of Harry Potter trading cards. The lesson cards come in five different varieties: care of magical creatures, charms, potions, transfiguration, and quidditch.

The spell cards cannot be played until certain lesson cards are acquired. Just as in the Harry Potter books, Harry was not able to cast a spell until he was taught how to do so by one of his esteemed Hogwart's professors. Once a player is ready to utilize a spell card he or she is able to damage opponents by casting spells, which may make an opponent miss a turn or even give the player the power to heal themselves. The adventure cards allow a player to challenge opponents with a task to accomplish. If opponents are unable to complete the task, their deck of Harry Potter trading cards will be damaged. However, if they are able to accomplish the adventure, they will be rewarded. Finally, the item cards provide a player's Harry Potter character with special powers in the form of wands and cauldrons.

In November 2001 the base set of the Harry Potter Trading Cards was expanded with the Quidditch Cup, offering an additional 80 cards. The Harry Potter Trading Cards received an additional 160 cards with the Diagon Alley expansion in March 2002 and Adventures in Hogwarts in June of 2002. The Chamber of Secrets expansion, containing 140 cards, was announced as the final set of the Harry Potter trading cards in October 2002.

Wizards of the Coast released the Harry Potter trading cards in four different languages: English, French, German, and Italian. The game became so popular that Harry Potter Trading Card Game Leagues were formed, which gave fellow wizards and witches a place to meet, increase their skills, and earn Harry Potter Trading Card Game prizes.

Although Wizards of the Coast claim the Chamber of Secrets expansion to be the final expansion, there are still some who are optimistic about future expansions. The Harry Potter trading cards continue to be enjoyed by folks of all ages. Similar to the brilliant writings of J.K. Rowling, the Harry Potter trading cards allow many the chance to take a moment to forget their mundane daily lives and escape into a more magical and fascinating world.
