Trading Card Care
To the average ten year old fan, opening the shiny mylar package for the first time and ogling the visage of his or her first - and probably only - sports idol can be as exciting and invigorating as playing the sport itself. But before zeal takes over, trading card collectors must understand how to care for their precious treasure.
The first step in trading card care is repackaging.
Cards should be placed in acid free comic book bags (perhaps trim the bags to fit) or small acid free slips covers. The flaps , and any other openings, should be sealed with transparent tape. Covering trading cards, once removed from the original packaging, will simultaneously protect them from threatening elements and allow visibility. All supplies can be found at hobby shops and comic books stores.
Although covering trading cards is an important protective measure, protection includes more than hermetically sealing them. Trading cards should be kept from direct sunlight. Like any photograph or painting, sunlight chemically activates the materials in the cards and causes yellowing and cracking. Moreover, all trading cards should be stored in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and mildew. Paper
products are plant fibrous and have a tendency to rot, like any other natural fiber, if not properly stored.
Furthermore, change is often good for trading card care. It doesn't hurt, as a simple precaution, to change the storage bags every several years. It will retain the freshness of the trading cards, which will retain the value.
Trading card care sounds like a lot of joyless work, but collecting cards shouldn't be joyless at all. By no means do I discourage collectors from indulging in their hobby. Trading cards are just like that favorite shirt in the back of the closet - they need to be seen every once in a while.
